Method 1: Boiling Water (Kitchen Drains)

For kitchen sinks clogged with grease, slowly pour a full kettle of near-boiling water down the drain in 2–3 stages, waiting 5 seconds between pours. This works for grease but not physical blockages like food scraps or hair. Don't use boiling water on PVC pipes — use hot tap water instead to avoid softening joints.

Method 2: Baking Soda + White Vinegar

Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Plug the drain and let it fizz for 15–30 minutes, then flush with hot water. Safe on all pipe types and effective on soap scum and partial grease blockages.

Method 3: Drain Plunger

A cup plunger — not the flange type for toilets — works well on basin and floor trap drains. Cover the overflow hole with a wet cloth, add water to create a seal, and plunge with firm strokes 10–15 times. Remove sharply on the last stroke to pull the blockage loose.

Method 4: Manual Drain Snake

A basic 3–5 metre hand snake from Mr DIY or Ace Hardware (RM15–40) is the most effective DIY method for hair clogs in bathroom floor traps. Feed until you feel resistance, rotate to hook the clog, then pull out.

Chemical Drain Cleaners: Use With Caution

Products like Drano work on organic blockages but degrade pipe joints with repeated use. Never pour them into a fully blocked, standing-water drain — caustic splash-back causes burns. Use sparingly as a last DIY resort.
